Problem of the Day

Chapter 11, Lesson 1

Ava is planning a tulip bed in her garden to be planted with red and purple tulips. The bed, which is in the shape of a square, will have a sculpted region at the center for the red tulips. In a drawing, Ava has formed the central region from four congruent sectors of circles with centers at the vertices of the square. In the actual garden, each side of the square bed measures 9 feet.

Write and evaluate an expression to find the area of the central region of the tulip bed. Express your answer to the nearest tenth.
