Problem of the Day

Chapter 5, Lesson 9

Hal is combining two recipes for cookies: oatmeal and raisin bran. He is using two-thirds of the amounts listed in each recipe. The oatmeal recipe lists one and one-half cups of flour and the raisin-bran recipe lists one and five-sixths cups of flour.

Hal opens a full three-pound sack of flour and measures out the required amounts of flour. The instructions on the flour sack say that 1 pound of the flour is equivalent to 4 cups.

Write and evaluate a numerical expression that can be used to find the number of cups of flour that remain in the sack.
